Lets hear a little about the man behind the beard. I will start, here is mine.
My real name is Keith, I am 58 years old and fully retired. I have worked my whole life in a myriad of professions. I did the usual things a snot nosed little brat does such as lawn work, and a paper route. I have worked in a hospital kitchen, spent 3 years as an Airborne solider in the 82ABN Division, hence my handle abn82. I worked in some of the most regulated industries in America, outside of the crap in the Army. I worked in banking in NYC and Wall Street Jobs for a dozen years. I owned and operated my own tractor trailer for 3 years, sold it. Took off 2 1/2 years and bought a used Volvo tractor and drove from 2004 to the summer of 2011. I live on 10 secluded acres with my love Ed. He is a retired social worker. This is by far the happiest I have ever been in my short life. I consider myself an analog man in a digital world. The less I have to leave home the better. If you saw where I live you would know why. I have always done my best to live under an honorable code of conduct. I can and do say what I mean in no uncertain terms. I consider myself a right of center Libertarian. I have the attitude that every able bodied person can make an honest living if he chooses to. I have little respect for this current hand out philosophy. I believe that free market capitalism is the true path to prosperity. I have thought this way, believe it or not since I was 16. It has served me well for 42 years. My hobbies are gardening, I grew onions, garlic, lettuce, broccoli, sweet peppers, jalapenos, and 5 varieties of basil this past season. Still have a lot of basil left. Oregano, marjoram, sage, and rosemary grow year round. I also home brew beer and wine. I made 6 gallons of apple wine about 3 months ago, it needs to be racked to help in the clearing process. It can take up to a year. Then I will bottle it.
So that is it, any other stories out there?
GROW BABY GROW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keith
Edit - I forgot to mention that I live in Manchester, TN. Manchester is the home of Bonnaroo. Bonnaroo is an outdoor music festival which is attended by around 80000 people.

Buddy, Do you still drive or did you drive OTR? My favorite time was when I was leased to my brother. I got 90 0/0 of the load revenue. I liked Schneider Nat'l as they had this program called "Independent Contractor choice" The only reason I have this 2007 laptop was to be able to pull up the Schneider load board. If a man has any concept of planning his trips you can do very well and have a limited amount of down time. I could never drive and get into that thing were you have to wait for your load to be assigned to you.
My neighbor is always working on stock cars for those 1/4 to 3/8 mile dirt tracks. I watch them just rebuild and do things on the cars during the week. They are very loud, glad he is 1/4 mile away through the trees.
Now I drive a maintenance free 2003 Camry and an 2001 s-10 with 48000 miles on it. If I ever have to buy a car again it will be a Camry. It has 125,000 miles on it. The only maintenance has been the usual oil changes, wipers, tires, and one battery. They make a fine product.

I never drove OTR just local when I first started for my dad. I still have a CDL, I have great respect for long haul drivers it is a tough job. We run 55 trucks and 130 trailers and have a good core of drivers. Just a blip compared to my dad's company which had 2200 trucks and 5000 trailers!

Once you have more than the one you drive it is an instant headache. It is amazing how many guys have no concept of opening up the hood to do simple things like check the oil, or even walk around the unit to look for something out of order.
55 trucks and 130 trailers, though small vs Schneider is still a heck of a commitment. What is your part in the operation? I know I would be a good dispatcher, I found preplanning myself was so simple. Just have to think a few moves ahead, not much different than chess. 2200 trucks and 5000 trailers is big time. Is that a place I would have heard of?

Do you have enough so you can sell the company and retire? That was my goal to retire by 55. If I did not goof off so much before hand I might have been able to retire earlier. Will you tell me the name of his company? Is it based in Michigan?

I'm Brandon. I'm 22, almost 23 in March. My life started early as I had my oldest daughter a month after turning 17. We moved out two months after that together and have been on our own since. We have 2 beautiful daughters and a 3rd baby on the way, just a few weeks into the pregnancy. I have worked in retail sales since I was 16 and last year stopped and became a tree trimmer. I trim trees for clearance on the power lines. Keeps people safe and power on. It's a fun/dangerous/tough job but I don't mind it too much. I do feel a little underused in terms of my mind, in very tech oriented and am probably wasting my brain and destroying my body for no reason. I play guitar and bass, I love music. I love to hunt, shoot and fish. I love the woods. I drive a little 88 toyota truck and it suits me very well I think. I just bought my first home in August, oh the responsibilities! I am generally a very giving person and am always one to help someone else out , however I've been called a dick multiple times by some people so I guess maybe I'm not as nice as I'd like to think... Or maybe they were just dumb. Chances are high on either side. That's me, Brandon 22 homeowner father of 2 with 1 more on the way. Tree trimmer, hunter, fisherman, outdoors man

Brandon - Thanks for that info on yourself. For one I think you have your act together young man. You got married at a very young age. Most things are against you, especially when children are involved. You have your own home, a good job and number 3 on the way. I live in Tennessee and our tree trimmers make some decent money. An older man around here with less than a high school education started out as a tree trimmer, that evolved into his own company. He is now retired and he is worth over 1,000,000 dollars. If you manage your life as described, maybe you could learn your skills where you are and work on getting your own crew and of course all of the equipment. When the local power company trimmed our trees here I was home. I was with the crew the whole time. They had their procedure and I asked if they could trim differently then their prescribed procedure. They listened to my ideas and did EVERYONE of them. They did such a nice job I called up the power company and thanked them for having such a great crew. They were a hired crew, so I then had to call up the company that the crew worked for. I did so, I was impressed with how they worked with me. Do you do that also? It really makes the homeowner feel so much better as I can attest. All I ever heard were horror stories about these power crews. I say poppycock!!! At least with me I have an excellent experience.
One bit of advice from an old man. (58) If you can afford it, please pay an extra amount each month towards your principal on your mortgage. My mortgage was around 750 a month. I sent an additional 100 a month. On a 30 mortgage that extra payment will make that around a 20 year or so mortgage. Once you get use to the extra payment you will not even notice it.
Where do you live? Do you have acreage? Do you have a garden? If so do you grow some vegetables? There is nothing like home grown tomato's. Those store bought tomato's are just horrible.
What do you hunt? Do you eat your bounty? I hunted once and it was boring to me. Plus I am way to fidgety. I do like to fish. How can a man not like to fish, you get to sit, move around, drink beer, have conversation, and maybe a fish will find your hook!!! Not bad in my book.
Glad you are here and that was nice story about yourself.
Well Done
Keith

I like to shoot but not hunt and I like to catch but not fish. Basically I love shooting guns, but hunting is so much about waiting and waiting. Duck hunting or pheasant hunting is fun because there is a lot of action. Same with fishing I like the catching part but not the waiting part.

Well our mortgage is 1173 and it's pretty close to our max budget we do however want to send in our tax return towards the principal each year. Great advice! I hunt deer, though I've never been successful, I still love it! I have eaten the rabbit and grouse I've shot. I'm a firm believer to use what you kill. Don't kill it unless it serves you a purpose. IE shooting sage rats to help the alfalfa farmers. I fish for bass and trout. We have awesome steelhead and salmon fishing here but I've never tried. If a homeowner wants their tree done a certain way and we can make it within our guidelines we absolutely work with them, though most times the homeowners aren't even around and if they are they know what to expect and let us do the work. Some even bring out food and drinks. One lady brought us cookies and hot chocolate one day and coffee cake the next! I've done some side work for friends but seeing as climbing gear is about 3-600 for a full set of basic gear it's kinda outta my range right now. Tree trimmers here make a varied wage. My yard is union and follows the union scale of pay, I make around 22 an hour and here that's pretty good for no college education. Some guys who work for the companies that service multiple utilities make between 10-18 and hour and the guys who work for the utility themselves "in house" can make like 35-45 an hour. That's the goal! I work for a company contracted through Eugene's power company. wright tree service, were a big company but in my area we are EWEB exclusive. I do not have much land. Just a normal 1/8th acre lot. Our home was built in 1915 and it's awesome. There is a vacant lot behind me and it's owned by the parents of the people we bought our house from. They have told us we can "use" the lot as we want to and are figuring out a final price for us to buy it. Although I doubt we can really afford it. Though it would make my lot amazing. Right now my yard is tiny. I take the dogs out back to play though cause it's a nice big lot. We have a 3 legged 3 month old german shorthaired pointer, a 4 month old chocolate lab and 2 chi weenies. I need that back lot
